Twitter for Android is a version of the popular social networking site that helps you make friends and send out tweets from any Android device.

If you never used Twitter before, there are just a few things you need to know. This site requires that you set up an account and choose a handle, which acts like you user name. Your tweets must be no longer than 140 characters, but you can share videos and images. Twitter will also let you shorten a URL to share a link without going over the character limit. You can also use hash tags on a tweet. When others search for those same tags, they may find your posts.

Twitter for Android is essentially a streamlined version of the Twitter site that will run on any Android device. It works just as well on older phones that it will on a phone with a newer operating system. The home page, which pops up when you open the app, shows you all the most recent tweets from the accounts that you follow. You can click the discover button near the top of the page to find new users, or you can use the activity button to see recent activity.

This app contains a number of useful features at the very top of the screen too. You should always look to the small icon of a bell to see if there are alerts or notifications you should read. The envelope icon to the right of the bell lets you know when you have a new private message. You can click on the envelope yourself to send a private message to another registered user.

A magnifying glass icon acts like a search button. When you want to search for popular hash tags or tags relating to certain content, you can use this button. The app also has a search function that lets you search for friends and other users like those who live in your city.

As with the full version of Twitter, you can only write tweets of a certain amount. Some users also found that the Twitter app crashed or that it froze and that they had to reboot the app to make it work again. If you can overlook those minor flaws, you'll find that Twitter for Android is great for using Twitter while away from your computer.

Pros:

  • Lets you use the same hash tags you use on the full version
  • Can keep you logged in when you close down the app
  • Has simple controls that are easy to use
  • Can use filters when sharing and uploading photos
  • Built-in support lets multiple accounts share the app

Cons:

  • Can only support tweets of up to 140 characters
  • May require that you reboot the whole app due to glitches
  • Will sometimes freeze in the middle of an update
  • Often has a long wait time when refreshing or reloading the app
